During the pandemic, while staying home and seeing clients face challenges due to stress, social distancing, and limited access to mental health care, I was truly inspired to write my first self-help book, “How to be a Mental Health Savage.” I actively promoted it through podcasts, radio, and social media, with the hope of raising awareness, breaking down mental health stigma, and inspiring healing. I met many wonderful people who courageously shared their mental health journeys, learned how important therapy is, and began saying, “I need help.” The silence during that time caused many to turn inward, igniting a movement I am genuinely passionate about continuing.

Historically, the word “mental” was often used as an insult, which unfortunately led to many people being ostracized by society. Back then, the limited understanding of mental illness resulted in treatments that were not only inhumane but also frightening for many. This created fear both among those experiencing mental health challenges and those around them. Thankfully, today’s advances in medicine and therapy have transformed our view of mental illness. It’s no longer a death sentence—in fact, it can even become a superpower, as beautifully demonstrated through the counseling sessions at MHS.

Similarly, the word “savage” originally described fierce, uninhibited people, but now often empowers those determined to achieve greatness. The phrase “Mental Health Savage” challenges mental illness stigma by emphasizing someone willing to fight for balance across spiritual, emotional, physical, intellectual, environmental, mental, and financial areas. This organization aims to break stigma, advocate, and explore new healing methods, ultimately building a caring community that fosters understanding, support, and connection.

I'm Dr. Oluwatamilore Odimayo, and I truly care about sharing a new and positive perspective on mental health and stress. I hope everyone who’s going through tough times feels acknowledged and supported, because I believe that the path to healing can be a rewarding and uplifting experience.
